“Opunita (Prickly Pear) in Flower” 2024
5” X7”
Watercolor and Natural Pigments on weighted paper
The original painting was done with a mix of watercolor and natural pigment paints by Beam Paints. Check them out they’re awesome. This is part of a series inspired by my move to Texas in 2022. I started this piece as a gift for my mother. I painted this from a photo I took of the prickly pear plant is right outside my apartment. This plant has allowed me to stay connected to nature and harvesting/processing plants while living in the city. I have harvested the prickly pear fruit from it, as well as the cochineal bugs on the plant that folks in Mexico have used as a natural dye for hundreds of years. I started this piece in June of 2024 and finished it in August 2024.
